Hitting the Dreaded Dieter's Plateau
I lost 25 pounds over the course of six months, but I've been stalled at the same weight for two weeks now. What's going on, and what can I do to resume my losing ways?
You're not alone. Most
dieters hit the dreaded plateau at some point, and I can attest to the
fact that it's both frustrating and disheartening. Fortunately, though,
there are remedies.
The first thing to do when weight loss grinds to a halt is to make
an honest assessment of what you're actually eating. Over time, it's
easy to become lax on a diet and revert to old patterns like nibbling
while cooking, going back for seconds, and increasing portion sizes. If
you haven't weighed or measured your food in a while, get out your food
scale and measuring cups again. Also, start tracking everything you put
into your mouth in a food diary. Chances are, you'll zone in on the
trouble spots pretty quickly. The next thing to focus on is exercise. If you've slacked off, get back on track. If you've been diligent about your exercise regimen, try increasing either the duration or intensity of your workouts. Adding even 10 to 15 minutes of cardio will help you burn an additional 50 to 100 calories.
Finally, relax, and don't lose hope. As long as you're eating and exercising appropriately, your weight loss will resume. Right now, your body may just need a little breather.
