State Librarian – PA Department of Education – Harrisburg, PA
The Pennsylvania Department of Education
is seeking candidates for the position of state librarian. The
position offers a significant opportunity for a highly qualified and
motivated individual in the
planning, coordination, and direction for all activities of the state’s
library program including statewide library development, school library
services and research/resource library service to state government,
other libraries, and the public. The state
librarian is responsible for policy formulation and implementation,
fiscal administration, and distribution plans for federal and state aid
to libraries; functions as executive director to the governor’s advisory
council on library development and recommends
legislative policy. State librarian provides leadership throughout the
state while collaborating with professional departmental personnel,
local library officials, and the government community to plan state
library services. The state librarian reports to
the secretary of education and serves at the pleasure of the
secretary.
Qualifications:
Eight years of experience in professional library work including four
years in a supervisory or administrative capacity with a public,
special, academic, or school library, or a library
networking organization, and a Master’s degree or fifth year degree in
library science, a program approved by the appropriate commonwealth
agency or accredited by the American Library Association. Additional
degree desirable, particularly a Master’s or Doctoral
degree in public administration or a Doctorate in library science.
Extensive knowledge of principles of librarianship, service programs,
and library finance is required. An understanding of automated library
systems and library networking systems is essential.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships must
have been demonstrated. Salary: $130,094 annually plus benefits.
