Assistant Store Manager

Fare & Square is based on a non-profit grocery store model and is in development to open Summer 2013 in Chester, PA. Fare & Square will give Chester, PA residents the access to “good food right around the corner” that has not been available to these resident in a full scale grocery store. Fare & Square will sell nutritious food staples with a focus on fresh produce, meats, dairy, seafood, and frozen foods. Fare & Square will help stretch customers dollars so that they get more for their money.

Position Summary:
The Assistant Store Manager reports to the Store Manager and is responsible for directing and managing associates and processes to protect company assets, maintain store conditions, maximize the store’s presentation, and maximize sales and gross profits.  The Assistant Manager is also a leader in providing an outstanding customer experience, maintaining effective employee relations, ensuring safety and sanitation standards, maintaining customer focused merchandising, maintaining the integrity and accuracy of payroll and other essential record keeping.  This position of trust will act as the manager on duty (MOD) and be a store key-holder.

Specific Responsibilities:
Communications

  • Manages information and communications  to and from the team associates including policy and procedure changes
  • Able to present to small and large groups, planning and managing effective meetings and team huddles
  • Reports to store manager information regarding store activities and performance; provides feedback
  • Writes content for and maintains up-to-date information for print materials such as general information, process flows, and best practices
  • As an MOD, ensures compliance to recall of product protocol

Store Operations Management

  • Ensures adherence to all laws, regulations, and company policies relating to the business and operation of the store
  • Maintains accuracy and integrity of the POS system by ensuring that all associates are adhering to the POS process and government regulations
  • Acts as a POS expert, trainer, and manager of the back office system, resolving issues at the terminal and acts as a relief cashier, including the bagging of customer purchases, when indicated
  • Responsible for the  integrity and execution of the pricing strategy by ensuring price changes are handled in a timely and efficient manner and that pricing inaccuracies are resolved
  • Maximize store sales through ongoing improvement in long-term sales trends, average   order size, and average item value
  • Responsible as a MOD for overall store conditions
  • Retrieves and analyses reports such as P & L, shrink, customer satisfaction, and other applicable measurement tools
  • Leads inventory counts and resolution
  • Responsible for back room inventory and conditions
  • Collaborates with Store Manager and Department Mangers to deliver great merchandising that meets the customer needs
  • Maintain opening and closing procedures
  • Be alert to temperatures and operating conditions of refrigerated storage areas and cases and promptly communicate and resolve any problems
  • Lead and manage food safety and sanitation standards as required by law, regulations and policies, and maintain tracking records accordingly including any changes or recommendations resulting from inspections or audits

Customer Service

  • Leads team in providing an excellent customer service experience;  coach and train team on customer service skills
  • Is a point of escalation for customer concerns

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Creates associate scheduling under the direction of the Store Director

  • Liaises with Store Manager and Department Managers about needs for tasks/shifts/scheduling and provides feedback on policies, procedures, and performance
  • Collaborates with Store Manager and Human Resources to create and implement recruitment, recognition, and retention goals & strategies
  • Participates in the selection process of new associates and in the evaluation and internal promotion of associates
  • Understands and executes the open door policy
  • Delegates tasks appropriately and supervises staff, and when needed, supervises staff supporting front end services
  • Responsible for the safety and security of the store and integrity of the product;  ensuring associates address issues with condition of the area,  security of inventory, and execution of loss prevention programs

Training/Staff Development

  • Train and certify store associates in sanitation and safe food handling processes and procedures
  • Responsible for training appropriate associates in the proper use of the POS system including front end and back office use
  • Partners with Store Manager and Human Resources in developing and growing a bench of talent

Other Responsibilities

  • Completes member transactions/overrides
  • Addresses member requests for returns and secured products
  • Other duties as assigned


Qualifications and Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent, college preferred
  • Two years of retail management experience or equivalent, grocery preferred
  • Ability, flexibility, and willingness to work a schedule in the hours of store operation
  • Have or willingness to acquire ServeSafe® Food Safety Program for managers
  • Must be able to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, percentages, etc.
  • Experience in point of sale and payment methods such as SNAP, EBT, credit, and debit
