School District of Philadelphia Releases Action Plan to Improve Quality of Education
This week, School District of Philadelphia Superintendent Dr. William R. Hite, Jr., unveiled a series of “bold expectations” to improve education across the city in his new “Action Plan v2.0.”
We applaud Dr. Hite for focusing on these very important goals to help our children succeed in school, and we stand ready to support the School District of Philadelphia in their efforts.
At United Way of Greater Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey, we believe all children deserve access to a quality education from cradle to career. It all starts with quality early childhood education — Kindergarten readiness is the first step along the path to long-term academic success. By ensuring children read at grade level by the end of third grade, we’re helping them transition successfully from learning to read to “reading to learn.” To help students stay on track toward graduation, we catch middle school students exhibiting early warning indicators in attendance, behavior and course completion in math and English, intervene in middle and high school through innovative mentoring programs, and provide exposure to higher education and the workplace – as well as the support to get there – so that young adults continue on to college and careers.
We know this work is worth it. In fact, it’s life-changing. And our kids are counting on it.
