Summary:
The Associate Director of Individual and Planning Giving is responsible for
developing and implementing an Individual and Planned Giving Strategy to
support the mission of the American Association for Cancer Research, Inc. This position reports to the Chief Executive
Director of AACR’s Foundation. The
Director and will work closely with AACR’s Executive Director of AACR’s Foundation,
the Board of Directors and AACR’s Foundation Board, in addition to other
members of the AACR. The Associate Director is also responsible for
developing an effective new and prospective donors’ cultivating strategy for
Planned Gifts, and strengthening and improving AACR’s existing individual
giving program.
Major
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Under the supervision of the Executive Director of AACR’s Foundation, the Director plans and directs the Individual and Planning Giving campaigns and strategies directed toward member and non-member scientists, as well as members of the general public. Tactics include direct personal solicitation visits, events, web fundraising, combined campaigns, direct mail and special projects.
- Directs all activities related to prospect qualification, cultivation, and solicitation of planned and outright gifts of all kinds, including charitable trusts, gift annuities bequests and life insurance.
- Develops, manages and nurtures relationships with volunteers, creates action plans, works with event vendors, edits and creates event materials (i.e. invitations, volunteer job descriptions, programs, proposals, signage, etc) and assists with Corporate Sponsorships.
- Manages the President’s Circle leadership giving program within the Annual Fund to encourage increased levels of giving by those most capable of supporting AACR. Through personal contacts, letters telephone calls, builds relationships with President’s Circle Leadership Council, and potential leadership donors. Works with Development Operations to ensure appropriate fulfillment of stewardship requirements.
- Works with the Senior Director of Philanthropy and Corporate Relations to identify and cultivate prospects.
- Manages special campaigns such as memorial giving, weddings, restricted fund campaigns, etc.
- Steward good relationships with upper level donors and VIPs (i.e. AACR Board Members, AACR Foundation Trustees, committee members, prospects, etc.) Stewardship practices includes updating donors about AACR programs, drafting letters from the CEO and/or other AACR leaders, creating donor appreciation events, personal outreach, etc.
- Ability to perform the essential functions of the position and other related duties as assigned and as necessary.

Education and Training:
- Advanced Degree Preferred
- Bachelors Degree Required
- Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU) and/or Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE)
Specialized
Knowledge & Skills:
- Advanced knowledge of Fundraising, Estate Planning, Financial Planning, Taxation, Life Insurance and Retirement Plans
- Experience in/or knowledge of a medical and/or health-related fundraising a plus
- Fundraising software & Direct Mail Campaigns
- Knowledge and/or an understanding of a variety of fundraising activities
Work Experience:
- 10 or more years of fundraising experience
- Proven track record in annual giving, direct mail, and special events management
- Experience working with high-powered volunteers
