Here’s What’s Happening in Harrisburg

It’s already been a busy week in Harrisburg! Here are some of the highlights:

Honoring Women in Pennsylvania
As Democratic Leader of the Ladies of the House Caucus, I was proud to co-sponsor HR714, which recognizes March 2014 as “National Women’s History Month” in the commonwealth and March 8, 2014 as “International Women’s Day.” HR714 was adopted 201-0 on March 19. It’s so important to acknowledge the historic contributions women have made in a variety of fields, including the arts, sciences, law and business. I’m humbled each and every day I’m able to represent the hardworking women of the 164th District, and I look forward to continuing to fight for women’s rights moving forward.

Making the Lottery More Beneficial to Seniors
The Pennsylvania Lottery helps seniors in a variety of ways, such as supporting the Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program, providing free rides and supporting the PACE/PACENET prescription drug programs. Last fiscal year alone, the lottery provided nearly $47 million to Delaware County seniors. Now that Governor Corbett has dropped his privatization scheme, which would have handed over management of the lottery to a foreign company, the House Aging and Older Adult Services and Finance committees held a joint meeting on how to maximize these benefits for our seniors. At this week’s meeting, we discussed HB2110, which would reduce the percentage of total revenues accrued from the sale of lottery tickets or shares to be set aside for property tax relief from 30 percent to 25 percent after June 30, 2015. At a time when the lottery tries to increase ticket sales to help boost the amount of revenue available for our seniors, it also needs to plan ahead to be able to make its game payouts. It’s worth mentioning that debate on this particular bill is far from over, and I will continue to make sure our seniors receive the important help they’ve come to expect from our Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program.

Upcoming Events/Stay Informed!
I hope you’ll participate in the third annual “Eat for Peace” Restaurant Week Friday, April 11 to Saturday, April 19. This celebration of international cuisine brings together individuals from diverse cultures and culinary backgrounds. The event is borne out of a House resolution inspired by local and national food personality Tony Luke, and will take place at restaurants in Drexel Hill, East Lansdowne, Lansdowne, Millbourne, Upper Darby and Yeadon. Call my office for a complete list of participating restaurants at 610-259-7016 or email April Rice at arice@pahouse.net.

Also, effective March 21, a House rule that limits communication with constituents 60 days before an election will prohibit me from sending you legislative emails until late May unless you confirm that you want to continue receiving them.

Since the legislature still will be in session with the budget debate heating up, I would like to continue communicating with you about these important legislative topics.

If you want to continue receiving my legislative emails, please visit the PA House Email Preference Center, make sure the "Stay Informed" box is checked, then click "Submit." It’s that easy!

Thank you for your interest and for taking the time to stay informed!
