Tips for Jobseekers 55 and Older
|
At many of our workshops and events, we hear from a significant number of older workers (especially those 55 and older) who cite specific challenges when it comes to reentering the workforce. Though it is true that some companies have a "culture" that has little room for older workers, the larger truth (which comes out when you look at employment statistics) shows that, although those who are 65+ represent a smaller fraction of the workforce, those who are aged 55 to 65 surprisingly have similar employment rates to those aged 20 to 24. Explore more workforce statistics here.
Nonetheless, the negative perception of the aging worker has become a kind of pernicious, self-defeating idea that needs to be challenged and eradicated. The best way forward for those who feel that age may be a barrier is to focus on your age as a positive quality that employers will benefit from. In Rhona Bronson's "How I Landed a Great Job in 5 Months After 50,"Rhona identifies four "R's" to keep in mind for your next interview. One might also feel tempted to add a fifth "R" to Rhona's list: reliability.
