New Year, New Résumé
Are you considering any New Year's resolutions? If you're looking for a new career, you may want to consider giving your résumé a makeover.

While reworking your résumé, it may be helpful to ask yourself the following questions:
  • Do you have a "Profile" section? Often called a Summary of Qualifications, Career Profile, or Career Summary, this part of your résumé should take the place of an "objective," which has largely fallen out of favor. A good Profile section can be created using a few bulleted sentences that show you possess the experience, skills, and education that prove you are qualified for the position your are seeking. For more information, check out the resume format example onSusan Ireland's Resume site.
  • Do you say "I," "me," or "my" on your résumé? Having pronouns on your résumé is a big no-no. It's just one of those rules that, sensible or not, is not likely to change. So, be careful when writing your experience section to begin each point with an "action verb," and if you find an "I," get rid of it! A useful list of action verbs can be found on the Boston College website.
  • Have you included "keywords" your résumé? Keep in mind that there is no "one size fits all" résumé. Use specific words and phrases that are associated with the kind of work you're applying for. Learn more about keywords from the Glassdoor Blog.
If you really want to give your résumé a new look for the new year, come to one of our workshops!

PA CareerLink® at Delaware County Community College has a number of workshops offered at no cost to you, such as our introductory PC Workshop and Résumé writing workshops. Call us at 610-723-1220 to reserve a seat.

Mock Interviews
Debbie Schmucker, of Delaware County's Eaton Corporation has graciously volunteered to conduct "Mock Interviews" for registered jobseekers who have attended our "Interviewing Techniques" workshop (within the last 6 months) at DCCC.

Please keep in mind that the purpose of a mock interview is to give a jobseeker an authentic interview experience and a chance to gain valuable feedback. In no way is this meant to be an "informational interview" with Eaton Corporation, or any other employer we associate with.

Nonetheless, you should come prepared as if you were to interview for the job that you are looking for, so be prepared to dress appropriately. The interviews will be scheduled for January 16th, from 9:00am to 2:00pm. You must pre-register for this event by calling Michelle Overton at 610-723-6005. Michelle can also assist you with any questions you may have.
We would love to hear about your job search success. Please respond to this e-mail to share with us helpful tips that you have learned through your job search.

Sincerely,

The PA CareerLink
