JOB TITLE: Community Organizer/EPIC CoordinatorCLASS: Full-time (40 hrs/wk), Exempt
SUMMARY:
United Communities Southeast Philadelphia employs community organizing to develop neighborhood leadership to address issues of concern in the community and create greater trust among the varied ethnic populations in the community. This is done through addressing issues such as home repair, quality of life, drugs, crime, economic development, planning for open space, and issues that impact youth development. One of the significant efforts to reach these goals is the facilitation of the South Philadelphia EPIC Stakeholders Group. The Stakeholders group is a leadership team composed of community residents, provider agencies, the community of faith, educational institutions and other entities that have an interest in the development and growth of South Philadelphia. The EPIC mission is to facilitate the development of positive, mutually supportive relationships that are consistent with and will support the successful achievement of the goals and aspirations of the youth, children and families living in the community.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Organize leadership teams (primarily but not limited to the EPIC Stakeholders) to address issues such as home repair, quality of life, crime, drug sales, economic development, youth development and improving the relationship among diverse groups of population.
Conduct surveys with community residents to assess neighborhood concerns.
Attend community meetings related to the work.
Facilitate specific meetings related to neighborhood issues as determined by leadership teams, surveys, and other community outreach activities.
Maintain a comprehensive assessment of the organization’s target area(s).
Organize block by block community residents, and build community power to work with policy-makers to ensure community growth and development.
Provide leadership training sessions for team members.
Develop relationships with decision-makers in preparation for full-scale community advocacy efforts.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor Degree (Preferred)
Minimum of 3 years in community organizing experiences
Three years of leadership development experience
Ability to train leaders and hold them accountable
Strong interpersonal and communication skills
Strong written and cognitive skills
Ability to address large groups and work well with diverse populations
Self-motivated with a strong commitment in empowering the community to address issues and concerns
Resource development such as grant writing, and fund raising
Computer knowledge of Windows-based programs
