Job Search Tips for Success
Send out 5 resumes a day. In today's struggling economy, if you want to land a job quickly, you may need to amp up the productivity of your job search. Current statistics say that there are four qualified applicants for every available job, but odds can vary considerably between jobs--for jobs in high demand you may sometimes be competing against 1000 applicants. Setting a daily quota for applications or inquiries will ensure that you maintain your inertia and give you a chance to beat the odds.
Reapply. If you didn't get an interview for a job that you felt very optimistic about, but instead got a rejection letter stating that "they would keep your resume on file," don't expect a call if the job reopens. Sure, they will keep your resume on file, for legal reasons, but most employers start a fresh candidate search for every opening, even if the position became available again after a short duration. As frustrating as it may be, to get another chance you will probably have to go through the screening process again.
Do some research. If you find a position you're interested in, do a little research about the company posting the job. A good starting place is simply to google the company and check out their website. Information about company culture, corporate ethics, and mission statements may give you valuable talking points for your cover letter or interview.
Some of these ideas were inspired by Dr. John Sullivan's article on Recruiting Dirty Little Secrets, which contains a lot of good information specific to corporate practices.
You may also want to join us for our Job Search Strategies Workshop, which is offered at both our Chester location and our office in the Workforce Entry Center of Delaware County Community College.
