Long-Term Unemployment

How to Handle Questions about Long-Term Unemployment
If you have been out of work for over a year, you should be prepared to face a question at your next job interview along the lines of "So...what have you been doing over the past year?"
How you answer this question can tell a potential employer a lot about you, whether positive or negative. For example, someone may come across as self-motivated, while others may appear defensive or embittered. As the article points out, going into a long story of how you came to be terminated unfairly from your last job might reflect poorly on your coping skills. Keep in mind that Hiring Managers are often nore sympathetic than you might think--they know that it's bad out there. And, of course, saying ANYTHING negative about your previous employer could be a deal breaker.

The 21st Century Workplace
Skype interviews, online applications, applicant tracking systems--these are the things of our new century, and like it or not, these technologies are here to stay (or at least to linger while they get replaced by the next wave of technologies.) Now is not a good time to hate computers or smart phones. People fear what they don't understand, and as the unwarranted fear of new technologies can significantly hinder your work search, you may want to get your feet wet.
For more specific guidance and instruction on how to use these new technologies to help your job search, you may want to consider coming to one of our LinkedIn Workshops or our newly created Job Search Strategies.
